Types of Christmas LightsWhen it comes to decorating for the holidays, it can be overwhelming in today’s technologically advanced market to shop for types of Christmas lights! There are so many to choose from! If you were to look back 30 or 40 years, you would see how far Christmas lighting options have advanced. It used to be that the standard C7 and C9 lights were the only types of Christmas lights on the shelves. Simple and easy to select, your only decisions were how many you needed and what color.

But nowadays there are so many other types of Christmas lights available to decorate with! Here are the typical ones that you will come across:

Types of Christmas lights
Christmas rope lights
Small lights enclosed within a rope of clear, plastic tubing. Sold by the foot, generally a 150 foot roll. Choose between steady (lights stay at a constant rate) or chasing lights (patterned lighting designs). Very versatile: windows, outdoor decorating, doors and railings, outlining buildings.
Christmas Net lights
Extremely convenient for blanketing bushes and trees with hundreds of mini lights, all at once. Can also be wrapped around tree trunks. Usually sold as a 24 cubic foot net. Easy to create a uniform illumination!
Mini Christmas lights
Inexpensive, low voltage. (Far less costly than the original C7 or C9 bulbs). Available in 50, 100, 150 and 200 light strings. Connect up to 400 lights on one string. Great for deciduous trees and small shrubbery.
Christmas icicle lights
Look like icicles hanging from the eaves. Generally clear, white or pale blue bulbs. Usually sold in a strand of 100 or 150 lights. Most have blinking capabilities. Great for hanging from the tops of walls inside a room, or for trough gutters, railings or fences on the exterior of a building.
Christmas spot lights
Highlight trees, decorations, windows or doors. Can be white or colored (usually red, green or blue). A gorgeous decorating enhancement when placed strategically.
LED Christmas lights
A modern day innovation. Saves about 80% in electricity as compared to C7 or C9 bulbs. Longer bulb life (average of 50,000 hours!) If one bulb burns out, the others will remain lit. Choose from a wide variety of colors and textures. A modern and funky alternative. Great for trees because they don’t build up heat.
