Christmas Tree DecoratingWhen you are Christmas tree decorating, keep in mind that tried and true design principles will probably work best. Depending on how far you want to go with your Christmas tree decorating, there are a few basic design principles to follow.

Many families have a few boxes here and there of ornaments which they have collected over the years. Some ornaments were gifts, others made by the kids in school, and all have special memories. But, if you are going for a new look this year, wanting to simplify the amount of decorations you put on the tree, or use a new them for this year’s Christmas tree decorating, concentrate on interior design basics. Basics such as symmetry, color harmony, repetition, coordinating patterns, etc.

Here are some guidelines for great Christmas tree decorating!

1. Choose a color scheme! This will make all your other Christmas tree decorating decisions much easier. You can pick a color based on ornaments and decorations you already have, the colors in your home, or the them you have chosen for your tree.

2. Formal or informal? What type of look are you going for? The silver candlestick or rustic twigs? Do you want a quilted or snowman fabric tree skirt a red, velvet version?

3. Proportion. Some people like hanging the larger ornaments on the bottom of the tree, and hanging the smaller ones towards the top. This is a great symmetry trick. However, you will need to vary the size of the elements which you use in your holiday décor. Huge Christmas balls along with tiny angels, large red bows with thin tinsel, etc.

4. Repetition! Repeat, repeat and repeat! Whichever color or object which you are concentrating on, make sure it appears in the garlands along the banister, the wreaths on the door, consistently throughout the tree, in your centerpiece, etc. So if your theme is snowmen, Santas, or the nativity scene, make sure it is consistently apparent!
