Another option for outdoor lighting is the "miniature," which costs less and consumes less power than the classic outdoor light string. It can be used around the perimeter of your home, as well as in trees. In most cases, the miniature comes in strands of 50 or 100. The strings run in series, which means if one bulb or socket fails, you can lose a whole section.

Christmas lights using incandescent bulbs are somewhat notorious for being difficult to troubleshoot and repair. In the 1950s and 1960s, the series circuit connected light sets would go completely dark when a single bulb failed. So in the fairly recent past, the mini-lights have come with shunts to allow a set to continue to operate with a burned out bulb. However, if there are multiple bulb failures or a shunt is bad, the string can still fail. There are two basic ways to troubleshoot this: a one by one replacement with a known good bulb, or by using a test light to find out where the voltage gets interrupted. One example made specifically for Christmas lights is the LightKeeper Pro. For additional information, see the troubleshooting section of the Holiday lighting technology article.
A clear glass tube is heated over an open flame. It is then inserted into a mold. The glassblower then blows into the end of the tube. The glass expands to fill the mold. The glass takes on the shape of the mold. It is cooled. A silver nitrate solution is swirled about inside the ornament. This gives the ornament a silver glow. The outside of the ornament is painted or decorated with metal trims, paper clippings, etc.[11]

In the Western world, rolls of brightly colored paper with secular or religious Christmas/winter/Hanukkah motifs are manufactured for the purpose of giftwrapping presents. The display of Christmas villages has also become a tradition in many homes during this season. Other traditional decorations include bells, candles, candy canes, garland, stockings, wreaths, snow globes, and angels. Snow sheets are made specifically for simulating snow under a tree or village.
From that point on, electrically illuminated Christmas trees, but only indoors, grew with mounting enthusiasm in the United States and elsewhere. San Diego in 1904, Appleton, Wisconsin in 1909, and New York City in 1912 were the first recorded instances of the use of Christmas lights outside.[15] McAdenville, North Carolina claims to have been the first in 1956.[16] The Library of Congress credits the town for inventing "the tradition of decorating evergreen trees with Christmas lights dates back to 1956 when the McAdenville Men's Club conceived of the idea of decorating a few trees around the McAdenville Community Center."[17] However, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has had "lights" since 1931, but did not have real electric lights until 1956.[18] Furthermore, Philadelphia's Christmas Light Show and Disney's Christmas Tree also began in 1956.[19][20] Though General Electric sponsored community lighting competitions during the 1920s, it would take until the mid-1950s for the use of such lights to be adopted by average households.
Some places make huge displays of these during December, such as Callaway Gardens, Life University, and Lake Lanier Islands in the U.S. state of Georgia. In east Tennessee, the cities of Chattanooga, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg have light sculptures up all winter. Gatlinburg also has custom ones for Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, while Pigeon Forge puts flowers on its tall lampposts for spring, and for winter has a steamboat and the famous picture of U.S. Marines Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, in addition to the city's historic Old Mill.

“These lights are wonderful! My initial idea was regular holiday tree lights, but they were too bulky and heavy, so I found these. They are lightweight, beautifully lit, and just great with the remote control for power and display options. They are so thin and light, they are invisible in the canopy. The perfect backlight for a tween on her iPad. Love ‘em! And the price is very reasonable.” [Editor’s note: We’ve written about these excellent Christmas lights before. Read more here.]

I swear, these are the faultiest lights EVER. I ordered one and then realizing that I needed two, turned around and ordered a second one to arrive a day later. The first one showed up, I plugged it in, two bulbs were out and then POOF, the whole string died. I returned that string and hoped for better results with the second one. That one arrived working. I set them up. The next day when I flicked my switch, two bulbs had already burned out.
The Christmas tree was adopted in upper-class homes in 18th-century Germany, where it was occasionally decorated with candles, which at the time was a comparatively expensive light source. Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and glass balls to hold the candles started to be used. Early electric Christmas lights were introduced with electrification, beginning in the 1880s.
Very pleasing effect. LEDs are cool-white. "Tail" effect suggests more comet than snowflakes, as does the speed. When first turned on, all tubes are 'in sync," but they drift apart over time, which is good, since random timing between tubes is more pleasing. Wire between tubes is about 13", so that is the maximum spacing when hung. Strings can be tied end-to-end. We are powering three strings using only one of the 5V power supplies that came with them. This is convenient, since AC power is needed only at one end of the group. No info on how many strings will run from a single power supply, but we can attest that at least three do. Still photos do not do them justice. Neither does my video, because they're much more impressive at night, but I wanted daylight ... full review
Animated wire frame elves and Santas add a bit of cartoon-like fun to your lawn. You can get penguins that throw snowballs at each other and reindeer that run. The animation can be jerky, like a crude Flash movie, but these are real smile-makers for young kids. Plus, they’re big. Some are 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide, so there’s a lot of bang for your $300 to $1,500.

Christmas decorations are typically put up in late November or early December, usually to coincide with the start of Advent. In the UK, Christmas lights on the high street are generally switched on in November.[17] In the U.S., the traditional start of Christmas time is Thanksgiving.[18] Major retailers put their seasonal decorations out for sale after back to school sales, while smaller niche Christmas Stores sell Christmas decorations year round.[citation needed]
Meant to embody the ambiance of a snow-covered wood, cast in a moonlit glow, this Wisp Tree evokes a subtle, grace, not traditional of seasonal decoration. The fresh white, 5mm lights are small, yet emit a brilliant halo of light that surrounds the tree in an almost ethereal glow. Merely place a white base layer at the tree's trunk to create a truly magical, yet elegant winter scene.

This actually works really well - the only thing is I wish the cord was a bit longer. I had to use an additional extension cord. But it worked perfectly otherwise. Has survived through a couple of really rainy days here. There is an on/off switch on the back and you can set it to go on/off with many different times. I set it for dawn/dusk so it goes on at dusk and goes off at dawn. LOVE that feature - don't even have to think about my lights! And there are 6 different place to plug in your lights so you can have so many! I'll post a picture of all my lights that are plugged into it.
Displays of Christmas lights in public venues and on public buildings are a popular part of the annual celebration of Christmas, and may be set up by businesses or by local governments. The displays utilize Christmas lights in many ways, including decking towering Christmas trees in public squares, street trees and park trees, adorning lampposts and other such structures, decorating significant buildings such as town halls and department stores, and lighting up popular tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House. It is believed that the first outdoor public electric light Christmas Holiday display was organized by Fredrick Nash and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in Altadena, California, on Santa Rosa Avenue, called Christmas Tree Lane. Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena has been continuously lit except during WW2 since 1920. Annual displays in Regent Street and Oxford Street, London, date from 1954 and 1959 respectively.
I should have just gone to the drugstore to buy some, but didn't have time. Ordered two strings of these instead. They came yesterday. I plugged them in and they worked - mid way putting them up a bulb went out so I tightened it a little, and the whole string went out. I couldn't fix it. So I tried the second string and the exact same thing happened. Two dead strings, no Christmas cheer. Totally bummed, please don't buy these!

Dresdens are three-dimensional ornaments. They are made of paper, card, or cardboard. Dresdens were produced mostly in Dresden and Leipzig, Germany, from the 1860s to WWI. They were originally priced between 1 and 60 cents. Subjects included animals and birds, suns and moons, humans, carriages and ships, etc. Some Dresdens were flat, allowing the buyer to collect them in scrapbooks.

The Christmas tree is sometimes explained as a Christianization of pagan tradition and ritual surrounding the winter solstice, which included the use of evergreen boughs, and an adaptation of pagan tree worship.[6] The English-language phrase "Christmas tree" is first recorded in 1835[7] and represents an importation from the German language. The modern Christmas tree tradition, though, is believed to have begun in Germany in the 18th century[6] though many argue that Martin Luther began the tradition in the 16th century.[8][9] From Germany the custom was introduced to England, first via Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, and then more successfully by Prince Albert during the early reign of Queen Victoria. The influential 1840s image of the Queen's decorated evergreen was republished in the U.S, and as the first widely circulated picture of a decorated Christmas tree in America, the custom there spread.[10] Christmas trees may be decorated with lights and ornaments.

Over a period of time,[clarification needed] strings of Christmas lights found their way into use in places other than Christmas trees. Soon, strings of lights adorned mantles and doorways inside homes, and ran along the rafters, roof lines, and porch railings of homes and businesses. In recent times, many city skyscrapers are decorated with long mostly-vertical strings of a common theme, and are activated simultaneously in Grand Illumination ceremonies.
