The first known electrically illuminated Christmas tree was the creation of Edward H. Johnson, an associate of inventor Thomas Edison. While he was vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, a predecessor of today's Con Edison electric utility, he had Christmas tree light bulbs especially made for him. He proudly displayed his Christmas tree, which was hand-wired with 80 red, white and blue electric incandescent light bulbs the size of walnuts, on December 22, 1882 at his home on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Local newspapers ignored the story, seeing it as a publicity stunt. However, it was published by a Detroit newspaper reporter, and Johnson has become widely regarded as the Father of Electric Christmas Tree Lights. By 1900, businesses started stringing up Christmas lights behind their windows.[14] Christmas lights were too expensive for the average person; as such, electric Christmas lights did not become the majority replacement for candles until 1930.[15]

“If you are looking for great lights for a cheap price, look no further. In comparison, these lights are a million times better than any at Walmart. They also have a beautiful clear cord and awesome dimming settings, so you can change the mood of the room with just the lights. Overall, these lights blew me out of the water with my expectations. I love them!”
Positive and negative molds were set into a press. A moistened sheet of card was put into the press. The images were pressed. When they had dried, they were sent to cottage workers for the finishing touches. This involved separating the form-halves from the card, trimming ragged edges, and gluing the two halves together. The form was then gilded, silvered, or hand-painted. Sometimes a small gift or sweet was put into the form. Forms were usually no larger than five inches.[14][15]
“I bought three sets of these a while back and just ordered three more! I seriously spent hours on Amazon and other sites trying to find the best deal on string lights (length and bulb size versus price) and these do not disappoint. Glad I did my homework! I hung mine in my loft, and I get so many compliments on them. The lights are bright but definitely not too intense, and the bulbs are fairly durable.”

The Christmas tree was adopted in upper-class homes in 18th-century Germany, where it was occasionally decorated with candles, which at the time was a comparatively expensive light source. Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and glass balls to hold the candles started to be used. Early electric Christmas lights were introduced with electrification, beginning in the 1880s.
This actually works really well - the only thing is I wish the cord was a bit longer. I had to use an additional extension cord. But it worked perfectly otherwise. Has survived through a couple of really rainy days here. There is an on/off switch on the back and you can set it to go on/off with many different times. I set it for dawn/dusk so it goes on at dusk and goes off at dawn. LOVE that feature - don't even have to think about my lights! And there are 6 different place to plug in your lights so you can have so many! I'll post a picture of all my lights that are plugged into it.

The illuminated Christmas tree became established in the United Kingdom during Queen Victoria's reign, and through emigration spread to North America and Australia. In her journal for Christmas Eve 1832, the delighted 13-year-old princess wrote, "After dinner.. we then went into the drawing-room near the dining-room. There were two large round tables on which were placed two trees hung with lights and sugar ornaments. All the presents being placed round the trees".[9] Until the availability of inexpensive electrical power in the early twentieth century, miniature candles were commonly (and in some cultures still are) used.
It's the season of lights, so make the most of it by filling your home with twinkling colors. Look for mini lights to add specks of color to the Christmas tree or garland in the house. For a more dramatic look, consider C7 and C9 lights to frame your doorways or illuminate outdoor trees. Drape your house in icicle lights that cascade down a few inches from the roof line, or cover your shrubbery with net lights that add instant sparkle. You can stick with a single color for a monochromatic look or spice it up with an array of hues. If you plan to turn your property into a holiday spectacle for your neighbors to enjoy, consider laser lights that dance on the walls or your house and pair them with inflatable characters that expand to take up space and move in the wind.

“These lights are wonderful! My initial idea was regular holiday tree lights, but they were too bulky and heavy, so I found these. They are lightweight, beautifully lit, and just great with the remote control for power and display options. They are so thin and light, they are invisible in the canopy. The perfect backlight for a tween on her iPad. Love ‘em! And the price is very reasonable.” [Editor’s note: We’ve written about these excellent Christmas lights before. Read more here.]

Outdoor Christmas lights did not become practical for the average family until the 1930s. By this time, not only were homes decorated with electric lights, stores, community Christmas trees, and government buildings were also adorned with the twinkling lights. General Electric began to sponsor community Christmas lighting competitions in the 1920s, but it wasn't until the 1950s that it was common to see rows of houses lit on the outside. Today, the places you find the lights are as numerous as the types of lights available.
