In the Western world, rolls of brightly colored paper with secular or religious Christmas/winter/Hanukkah motifs are manufactured for the purpose of giftwrapping presents. The display of Christmas villages has also become a tradition in many homes during this season. Other traditional decorations include bells, candles, candy canes, garland, stockings, wreaths, snow globes, and angels. Snow sheets are made specifically for simulating snow under a tree or village.

Jump up ^ "History of Christmas Trees". History. 2015. Retrieved 5 December 2015. Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree.

Christmas lighting does lead to some extensive recycling issues. Every year, more than 20 million pounds of discarded holiday lights are shipped to Shijiao, China (near Guangzhou), which has been referred to as "the world capital for recycling Christmas lights".[27] The region began importing discarded lights around 1990 in part because of its cheap labor and low environmental standards.[27] As late as 2009, many factories would simply burn the lights to melt the plastic and retrieve the copper wire, releasing toxic fumes into the local environment.[27] A safer technique was then developed that involved chopping the lights into a fine sand-like consistency, mixing it with water and vibrating the slurry on a table causing the different elements to separate out, similar to the process of panning for gold.[27] Everything is recycled: copper, brass, plastic and glass.
The holidays are fast approaching, and that means that it's time to start thinking about your Christmas decorating scheme, particularly in the lighting department. In any case, there are tons of outdoor Christmas lights to choose from out there, so we've rounded up some of the best—whether they be highly reviewed by customers, or just plain cool—holiday lights you can buy this season.

Positive and negative molds were set into a press. A moistened sheet of card was put into the press. The images were pressed. When they had dried, they were sent to cottage workers for the finishing touches. This involved separating the form-halves from the card, trimming ragged edges, and gluing the two halves together. The form was then gilded, silvered, or hand-painted. Sometimes a small gift or sweet was put into the form. Forms were usually no larger than five inches.[14][15]
I swear, these are the faultiest lights EVER. I ordered one and then realizing that I needed two, turned around and ordered a second one to arrive a day later. The first one showed up, I plugged it in, two bulbs were out and then POOF, the whole string died. I returned that string and hoped for better results with the second one. That one arrived working. I set them up. The next day when I flicked my switch, two bulbs had already burned out.

“I can’t believe how bright these tiny little lights are. I initially bought them for my kids’ room because their Christmas lights burned out. I wanted just enough light to help them sleep at night without being scared. As beautiful as these are, they were too bright for bedroom night-lights. They lit up the whole room. They were so pretty, though! I got the multicolored ones. I am going to use these inside during Christmas instead. The wire makes it so easy to wrap around anything. Great buy!”

The illuminated Christmas tree became established in the United Kingdom during Queen Victoria's reign, and through emigration spread to North America and Australia. In her journal for Christmas Eve 1832, the delighted 13-year-old princess wrote, "After dinner.. we then went into the drawing-room near the dining-room. There were two large round tables on which were placed two trees hung with lights and sugar ornaments. All the presents being placed round the trees".[9] Until the availability of inexpensive electrical power in the early twentieth century, miniature candles were commonly (and in some cultures still are) used.
